KATY, TX– One of ILTexas’ very own students is advancing to the most prominent national spelling bee competition in the world. Kirsten Santos, a sixth grade student at ILTexas Katy K-8, has advanced to the 2022 Scripps National Spelling Bee after competing in the Houston Public Media Spelling Bee

Santos’ winning word was “kata,” a Japanese term which means "a set combination of positions and movements (as in karate) performed as an exercise," according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary

Santos shared the 1st place win with Ishika Varipilli, a sixth grade student from Creekside Park Junior High in Tomball ISD. Both will represent the Houston Public Media in National Harbor, Maryland for the Scripps National Spelling Bee held May 29 through June 3, 2022.
