LANCASTER, TX–In honor of American Heart Month, ILTexas hosted a community service project in February where students and staff raised over $7,000 for the American Heart Association (AHA). The check was presented at the ILTexas Lancaster K-8 campus on March 25 by Nurse Karen Canady Barnes along with ILTexas Lancaster K-8 Principal Senta Wilson and ILTexas students that participated in the project.

For the service project, students were encouraged to wear red and make donations of at least one dollar for AHA to bring awareness to heart health and cardiovascular disease.

Liz Brown, a representative from AHA, stated the importance of the donation in advancing the organization’s mission

“Our mission is to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives, and so that means continually educating the community,” she said. “This is a great example of how the community is truly giving back and supporting those around them.”

While the donation was a charter-wide effort, ILTexas Lancaster K-8 was specifically chosen as the place to present the donation due to the history of heart health in the surrounding community.

“We’re presenting the check at Lancaster K-8 because in this community, there are a great number of people suffering with heart disease and strokes," Nurse Barnes said. "And so what a great way to show the community that we’re here supporting them and have money that will be able to help with research.”
